(diary) 18. Juli 1937, a literary-art voyage after purchasing a Bugatti with my husband, aristocrat Tadeusz de Lempicki, I placed two plain canvases and large tubes of paint by Lefranc & Bourgeois and Sennelier into the back of the car, some shades echoing Guerlain Rouge Basier red. We drove from Molsheim, France, about 40 miles to Baden-Baden in the Rhine Valley, parking under the trees of Lichtentaler Allee, staying at the Brenners Park-Hotel in room 85. Memorable Evenings unfolded among aristocrats, gamblers, artists, and spa-goers in a world of effortless European glamour and excess.
